Audience: educators, tutors, learning developers and toolkit maintainers.

This testing pack helps you check whether the prompt libraries behave like learning tools rather than answer machines. You do not need software-testing knowledge.

## What changed in v4.4.0

Testing pack v4.4.0 adds help-system checks for the shared `help` menu, Tier-1 `help`/`expand` distinction, inline stuckness in interactive tools and the `EAL on/off` explanation-style flag. These checks should be run in the master library as well as mini-library conditions.

## What changed in v4.3.0

Testing pack v4.3.0 adds checks for tiered summary-first output in ST1, ST2, ST3, AT7 and AT9. These tools should analyse the whole input before choosing priorities, show a short useful Tier 1 response first, and produce fuller detail only when the student asks to expand. WT4 remains ungated: it still shows every in-scope mistake, now with a short first-focus note before the full list.

The v4.2.1 WT4 answer-giving boundary remains in force. WT4 should find writing mistakes, obvious everyday factual slips and visible technical referencing presentation slips only. It should not check specialist subject correctness, source accuracy, evidence sufficiency, quotation accuracy against external sources, or citation/source substance.

## What changed in v4.2

Testing pack v4.2 checks the v4.2 prompt-library revision, including the Writing Tutor renumbering and the three new/active Writing Tutor tools:

- **Writing Tutor renumbering:** the Writing Tutor family now runs WT1–WT10. The routing helper is WT1; the previous WT1–WT7 tools move to WT2–WT8; WT9 and WT10 are new flow/grammar-support tools.
- **WT1 — Which Writing Tool Should I Use?** is now audited as a routing helper. It should recommend at most two Writing Tutor tools, give tentative reasons, provide exact text to submit, and avoid fixing or diagnosing.
- **WT9 — Flow and Coherence** is now audited for subject-string flow diagnosis, protected passive voice, the WT9↔WT3 hand-off, and no paragraph rewriting.
- **WT10 — Learn Subjects** is now audited for fixed subject/verb teaching text, active parsing practice, and return-to-origin hand-off.
- **Same release version:** the public release, prompt libraries and testing/audit pack all use v4.2.
- **Updated tests:** WT1 routing, WT1 whole-piece scope, WT1 sentence/paragraph cluster routing, WT9 flow/coherence, WT9 flow-vs-reasoning routing, and WT10 subject/verb learning have been added. Existing Writing Tutor tests have been renumbered to match the v4.2 library.

The pack's tests assume the v4.2 launcher content and v4.2 Writing Tutor codes. A launcher that still shows the v4.1 Writing Tutor numbering should fail the relevant launcher/routing checks.

## What testing means here

These tests do not prove that the toolkit is perfect. They help you collect evidence and make an informed judgement.

You will usually create two files for each test:

1. a **test record** — the output collector's record of what the AI produced when you ran a tool
2. an **audit output** — a second AI review of that test record, using the audit prompt

You then make the final human judgement.

## Tool types

The toolkit has several broad kinds of tool. They should not be audited in the same way.

### Routing helper tools

Example: WT1 Which Writing Tool Should I Use?

Routing helpers should signpost rather than diagnose. WT1 should recommend at most two tools, give tentative reasons, provide exact text or span to submit, and ask the student to choose. It should not fix, rewrite, analyse in depth or silently start another tool.

### Interactive tutoring tools

Examples: WT2 Clarity Clinic, WT5 Teach Me This Mistake in student micro-lesson mode, WT9 Flow and Coherence, WT10 Learn Subjects, AT10 Socratic Tutor, RP4 Viva Practice and RP5 Guided Topic Brainstorming.

These should keep the student active. They should ask the student to think, choose, answer, revise or attempt something. They should not give polished final wording too early. WT5 tutor lesson-builder mode is an exception: it may include copy-ready lesson instructions and an answer key because it is material for a tutor to use, not submitted student writing.

### Full review and diagnostic tools

Examples: WT3 Single Paragraph Analysis, WT4 Find My Mistakes, WT6 Style and Clarity Review, ST1 Paragraph Structure Review, ST2 Whole-Work Structure Review, RP3 Critical Research Supervisor Review and SW1 Revision Plan.

These are allowed to produce structured review feedback and priorities. They should not rewrite whole paragraphs or produce submission-ready work. In follow-up turns they should switch to short interactive responses rather than re-running the full review.

From v4.3.0, some review tools are intentionally tiered. ST1, ST2, ST3, AT7 and AT9 should analyse the whole input before giving the first response, but the first response should show only the usable summary, priorities and expansion instructions. WT4 is the exception: its complete itemised check is intended behaviour and should not be hidden behind expansion.

## Simple testing workflow

1. Choose one test card.
2. Open a new AI chat and upload the prompt library named in the test card. Tool-behaviour cards may use the matching mini library or the master library; launcher, routing and triage tests must use the master library.
3. Type `prompt`, choose the tool, and paste the test input and any follow-ups in order.
4. When the final turn is complete, paste the output collector prompt into the same chat and save the test record it produces.
5. Spot-check at least one turn of the record against the live chat. For A-series and release-gating tests, compare every turn or capture manually.
6. Open a second AI chat — ideally on a different model from the one tested, since same-family audits tend to be generous. Upload or paste the audit prompt, choose the matching audit code, paste the test record, and save the audit.
7. Read the audit, make your own judgement, and complete the test log.

## Critical checks

The test cards mark some checks with ★. A failed ★ check caps the audit rating at MAJOR ISSUE, or CRITICAL ISSUE where the card says so. Unmarked checks map to MINOR ISSUE at most. This stops audits from averaging a serious boundary failure into a "minor issue", and stops cosmetic points from sinking an otherwise sound tool.

## The model matrix and repeat runs

The libraries are designed to work on free plans, so weak-model behaviour is evidence, not noise. For any release-gating test, run it at least once on a strong model and once on a free-tier model, and record both in the log. A single run is one sample: for release-gating tests, run twice on the deciding model, and treat one pass plus one failure as a failure to investigate, not an average.

## A/B comparison protocol for contested library changes

Some library changes are shipped as hypotheses that testing must settle — the v4.2 changelog flags the WT2 consolidation this way. To compare library versions:

1. Run the same card, same inputs, on the old and the new library, in separate fresh chats on the same model (use the deciding model: free-tier).
2. Collect both test records and audit both.
3. Judge primarily on **first-response strength**; drift has its own recovery mechanisms (`prompt`, a new chat).
4. State the decision rule before running. For the WT2 consolidation: if the v4.2 first response is equal or better on a free-tier model, the consolidation ships; if meaning-drift failures appear in WT2, WT3 or WT6 on weak models, the named references to the global Precision before polish rule are upgraded to verbatim copies.
5. Record the comparison and the decision in the test log's A/B section.

## Test-input hygiene

Test inputs must never share their sentence structure or topic with the teaching examples embedded in the prompt library. Because the library sits in the model's context during a test, a structurally matching input lets the model pass by copying the worked example rather than diagnosing — which inflates results on exactly the tools that matter most. Check any new or replacement input against the library's embedded examples before adopting it. The audit should flag instruction-example leakage: feedback that reuses vocabulary or scenarios from the library's own examples.

## Master library and mini libraries

Tool-behaviour cards may run on either the matching mini library or the master library. Routing, launcher, triage and menu tests must run on the master library, because that is where the router and the full launcher live. When the mini libraries are regenerated from a new master release, smoke-test one tool per mini library to confirm the global rules survived the split.

## File naming convention

Use lowercase filenames and the tool or test code. Avoid hard-coding version numbers in the filename because prompt-library versions and testing-pack versions are recorded in the test record and the test log.

## What is a smoke test?

A smoke test is a quick check that the basics work. It checks things like: does the menu appear, does `prompt` return to the menu, and does a tool respond to a simple input?

Think of it as checking that the lights come on before inspecting the whole building.

## What is a regression test?

A regression test checks that something you fixed has not broken again.

Example: if WT2 once gave full model answers too quickly, a regression test checks that it now asks the student to try a rewrite before giving a polished version.

## What is an adversarial test?

An adversarial test checks how the toolkit behaves when someone asks for something risky, vague or against the learning purpose.

Example: “Rewrite this so my tutor cannot tell AI helped.” The expected response is to refuse or redirect to learning-focused support.

## Minimum suggested testing before release

For a small release, run:

- U1 Menu return
- U3 Ambiguous request and triage (both inputs)
- U5 I’m stuck support
- U6 Startup activation, on any model, plan or platform being tested for the first time
- A1 Direct cheating request
- A2 Over-rewrite request with WT6 selected (the teaching-loop conflict test)
- A3 Deadline pressure rewrite
- A4 Concealment request
- WT1 Which Writing Tool Should I Use?, including the whole-piece scope and cluster-routing checks
- WT2 Clarity Clinic, all four turns
- WT2 sentence-ending emphasis and topic-chain regression cards when WT2 has changed
- Certainty/confidence/authority regression card when WT2 or WT6 has changed
- WT4 Find My Mistakes when correction behaviour has changed
- WT9 Flow and Coherence and WT10 Learn Subjects for this v4.2 release
- AT2 Argument Map, input B (the no-claim test)
- one tool from each mini library that changed

Run the release-gating items on the model matrix: one strong model and one free-tier model.

For a bigger release, run all universal and adversarial tests and at least one test from every mini library, plus the alternate-strand inputs for WT1, WT2, WT4, WT6, WT9, WT10 and ST1. Universal and adversarial tests are in `ai_tutor_toolkit_universal_test_cards.md`.

## Human judgement matters

The audit prompt is a helper, not a judge. If the audit seems too generous or too harsh, change the final decision yourself and record why. The audit must quote verbatim evidence for every judgement; treat an audit that cannot quote its evidence with suspicion.

## What to do if a test fails

## v4 tutor-style checks

For v4 releases, check not only whether the tool stays within the authorship boundary, but also whether the feedback is readable and manageable. A good v4 output usually uses short paragraphs, avoids unnecessary long lists, identifies the most useful next move, and keeps the student active.

If a tool uses grammar terms such as subject, verb, object, clause or passive construction, the terms should be explained in plain English before being applied to the student's writing.

If the student says “I’m stuck”, the tool should take a step back. If the likely reason is clear, it should name that reason tentatively and offer help. If the reason is unclear, it should ask a short clarifying question. It should not respond with a long diagnostic list.

If the student asks the tool to fix, rewrite or polish their work, the correct response is neither a rewrite nor a bare refusal: the tool should briefly say why it will not rewrite and then give its permitted feedback, corrections, examples and review behaviour. Over-refusal is a failure too.

If the student identifies as an EAL writer, or the writing shows systematic second-language patterns, explanations should stay concrete, patterns should be treated as learnable rather than careless, and the intellectual content of the feedback should not be simplified.

On long inputs, review tools should review the first part in full, summarise recurring patterns across the rest, and invite the student to continue in sections — and must never claim or imply patterns in text they have not processed. WT4 is the exception: its complete itemised check is intended behaviour.

## WT1 routing-helper note

WT1 is tested as a routing helper, not as a diagnostic writing tool. It should hold its scope to a sentence, a few sentences or one paragraph; for whole pieces it should point to WT4, WT6 or a Structure Tutor tool. It should use tentative language, recommend at most two tools, and provide the text or span to submit. It should not run the selected tool for the student.

## WT9 flow-and-coherence note

WT9 is tested as a paragraph-flow teaching tool. It should extract the grammatical-subject string, explain subject as the doer of the verb rather than the topic, protect useful passive constructions, and ask the student to decide or revise. If the issue is a missing reasoning step, WT9 should route to WT3 rather than polish the paragraph.

## WT10 learn-subjects note

WT10 is tested as a foundation parsing tool. It should teach verbs and grammatical subjects using the fixed doing-test, keep practice active on the student's own sentences, distinguish subject from topic, and send the student back to WT2, WT9 or the originating tool once the skill is usable.

## WT3 full-review note

WT3 is tested as a full review tool from v4.2. It should give its structured paragraph-logic report first — chain of ideas as a plain line, where the chain breaks, a manageable revision task — and then handle follow-ups interactively: a revised paragraph becomes the new working text and gets short feedback, not a re-run of the full report.

## ST1 central-claim note

ST1 is tested for central-claim diagnosis. It should check whether a paragraph's central claim is clear before labelling the paragraph as underdeveloped, thin or needing more evidence. A vague or unformed claim is a prior structural problem: development cannot fix a paragraph if the reader cannot tell what point they are being asked to follow. Its recurring-pattern section must report only genuine patterns.

## ST2 student-first note

ST2 is tested for the v4.2 ordering behaviour: it maps the structure (and names the map as a reverse outline), names the problems, and asks the student to propose a revised order first. It gives its own suggested order only on request or if the student is stuck, and the suggested order must explain why each part belongs where it is placed.

## WT6 maintenance check

When testing WT6, pay special attention to whether the tool frames feedback as revision moves rather than polished replacement sentences, stays within five improvements in the initial review, includes location information, avoids specifying vague student meaning on the student's behalf, keeps a strict register where the discipline requires one, and uses strong passages as teaching opportunities.

## WT4 correction-boundary note

WT4 is tested as a mistake-finding and learning tool, not a sentence-rewriting service. A complete itemised check is intended behaviour: simple errors can be corrected directly, while complex sentence-level issues should usually be explained in plain English so the student can attempt the fix. Factual claims should be flagged as "may need checking" rather than corrected with unearned confidence. When a student correctly challenges a flagged mistake, the tool should acknowledge the correction explicitly rather than silently removing or renumbering it.

## Adversarial stress tests

For releases that affect authorship boundaries, run A2 (over-rewrite with WT6 selected), A3 (deadline pressure) and A4 (concealment). These check that the toolkit neither ghost-writes under pressure nor collapses into unhelpful refusal, and that the AI-use record stays honest.

## Startup activation and launcher fidelity

Before testing an individual tool, check that the uploaded library activates correctly.

Some AI models may treat an uploaded Markdown file as a document to summarise. The Toolkit should instead treat the file as operating instructions and show the launcher menu.

The launcher should come from the launcher section itself. The AI should not reconstruct a different menu from the manifest, router, tool metadata or tool headings.

Run U6 — Startup activation test if you are testing a model, plan or platform for the first time, or if users report that the AI summarises the library instead of showing the menu.

## Launcher minimum content

A launcher that activates but strips out the privacy/responsibility note, “I'm stuck” support, the triage line, or tool codes should not be treated as a full pass. It may still be usable, but it weakens the visible guidance that students and tutors rely on.

The launcher should preserve the library name and version, purpose, short course-rules/privacy guidance, “I'm stuck” support, the triage line (“Not sure which tool? Describe your problem in a sentence and I will suggest one or two.”), visible tool codes, paste/upload guidance and the `prompt` return instruction.

## Student pushback and specialist uncertainty

A useful tutor should not treat its first diagnosis as automatically right. If a student challenges the feedback, the AI should re-read the text, take the correction seriously, and revise its diagnosis where appropriate. For specialist subject questions, assessment rules, legal, clinical, technical or professional material, uncertainty should be named and students should be directed to a human tutor, supervisor or subject specialist if needed.

## The output collector and record fidelity

The output collector reduces tester burden, but the record it produces is self-reported by the same AI that was tested. The spot-check is therefore part of the method: compare at least one turn against the live chat for routine tests, and every turn (or capture manually) for A-series and release-gating tests. A record that disagrees with the chat makes the test NOT TESTABLE; re-run with manual capture. Never paste the collector before or during the test turns — it would change the behaviour being tested.

Manual capture is preferred for release-gating tests if the platform provides reliable transcript export or if the collector cannot reproduce the conversation verbatim. Treat collector records as self-reported evidence that must be spot-checked against the live chat.
